In a move that genuinely astonishes and stuns me with it’s awesomeness, my department at the BBC has just started a week in which every note of Beethoven’s ouevre will be broadcast on the radio. And as if that wasn’t enough of a shock to the system, over this coming week you can download in unencrypted MP3 form each of Beethoven’s nine symphonies to keep forever. Each symphony is performed by the BBC Philharmonic and prefaced with some introductory comments and contextualising information, and you can get the first and third symphony right now. Stunning. Delightful.

Thank you for reminding me about this 🙂 Very nice of the corp. to offer this, and this is what makes the Beeb superior to any other network.
Only 128kbps for the downloads, though. Sigh. It may be nitpicking, but 192kbps would have been perfect.
192kb/s would indeed be lovely and having an Ogg alternative even better but I’m not complaining. Thanks, Auntie, and thanks to Tom for the link.
Incredible stuff. Thanks Auntie! This is the Public Service remit in full effect
Brilliant well done beeb. Lets hope that someone doesnt decide to make it a profit centre and sell it off to Sony!
It would seem there is still good in the world. But for how long?
I applaud the DRM-free downloads. However, I’m curious about the terms on which the recordings are offered. Are they being released into the public domain, or is the BBC (or someone else) retaining the copyright? If they remain copyrighted, what sort of license is being offered? (e.g., can people re-distribute the files, can they modify them and distribute the modified version, etc).
Just curious. If this information is already on the BBC site, I apologize, but I couldn’t find it.
This is so great – thank you!
The downloads are very slow, which I’m sure is due to the popularity of the files…Have you considered using bittorent to distribute these?

From the download page Tom pointed to.
You can download and use it for your personal use, but that’s all.
I missed downloading the 1st and 3rd, and they are no longer posted on the BBC Radio 3 download page. Anyone know where I might get them? Thanks!
Just found out about this beautiful initiative yesterday evening, so I missed 5 out of 5. According to the “Download Disclaimer” it should not be possible to get them anymore. However, maybe someone has a suggestion how to get them??
Thx
Frans
Hmm, seems lots of people have my problem – they missed the oportunity – I WAS ON HOLIDAY! Is there a way to get these now that anyone knows?
I have the same question 🙁
If anybody has a hint on where to get them, please do let us know!

9 Mozart-symphonies now for free on dr.dk
Danish Broadcasting Corporation pulls the same trick on Mozart: they offer nine of Mozarts symphonies for free download. More on my blog: http://newmediatrends.fdim.dk/2006/01/9-mozart-symphonies-for-free-download.html
Hii
I’d like to access for beethoven symphonys Because
Ilike it so much
hoping you to agree
i like beethoven
Friend told me symphony 7 movement 2 is beautiful, so I want to hear it.
Steven, how did you get the 9th symphony?
If you want to download all Beethoven’s symphonies the easiest way to do it is to use bittorrent, first download a client – a popular one is azureus http://azureus.sourceforge.net/download.php then go to http://www.isohunt.com and search for beethoven symphonies there are a lot of results all different qualities and sizes, choose the one you want and click on it then click download torrent and select open. The torrent will open up in Azureus and as soon as you’ve selected a save directory it will start downloading. Happy listening 😀
Typical BBC and the rest of UK, lot of noise, then nothing much happens and quality also not the best.
I’m very looking to download those symphonies,so thank you for this effort
I’d like to listen to the Symphony music
